Uniform Identification
Alaric
I need help identifying the uniforms of these fellows. The fellow on the right is reported to be Thomas Davis Fox b. 1858, who served in the Coast Guard in the north of Ireland until pensioned in 1910:
1887–1889 Dunany Point Co Louth, Ireland
1889 -1896 Clogherhead, Co Louth, Ireland
1896 - 1901 Ballintoy, [Co Antrim, Ireland]
1903 North of Ireland Chief Boatman, Kilkeel, North Arran, Tirbane, Sheephaven.
But much as it resembles dress uniforms of the army in WWI, I have seen no such uniforms associated with the coast guards as yet. The cap badges appear similar to various grenadier and fusilier badges I have found, including (the most similar) a WWI cap badge worn by the Tyneside Irish Brigade of the Northumberland Fusiliers.
If the family ID is correct, this would have to be a dress blue navy/coastguard uniform dating well before WWI and indeed before 1911. Is this possible? Rating? Please help.

Ric Again.
To amplify this request and provide reference., here is a similar cap badge I found on the web identified as a WWI cap badge worn by the Tyneside Irish Brigade of the Northumberland Fusiliers. Another, with a simple, plain bomb instead of a medallion, was identified as a grenadier's cap badge. I have no idea what this would signify in a Navy/Coastguard context in Ireland pre-1910.

Again, please help.

Hello Aleric,
Do you have family details from the 1901 Ballintoy Census returns?. Also details of his marriage to Elizabeth Jane Martin Rundle, daughter of Edmund Rundle, Coastguard, who died 1933?.
Regards

Interesting photograph. It does not appear similar to Coastguard uniforms I've seen, but is rather reminiscent of police or RM uniforms. Perhaps others have more definite information?

Thanks for the response, Tony. I did indeed get the 1901 data from your web site and from the ShingleStreet site some months ago, for which I am grateful as the Irish data are relatively hard to come by. Indeed, Thomas Fox married the boss's daughter. But I did not know the date (or place) of Edmund Rundle's death. I would appreciate any info on that line. Thanks.

It occurs to me that you may have wanted more specific details of the marriage of Eliza Jane Rundle and Thomas Davis Fox for your own records. If so, here is their marriage certificate. Note that it was witnessed by Edmund Rundle, (in this case probably her brother, not her father).

Alaric,
Thank you for copy of Marriage record.
Burial record of Edmund Rundle :-
Rundle,Edmund. Coastguard. Age n/a.Date of Death 14 May 1933.
No headstone. Clogherhead. Dunany. Co.Louth.

Two Baptismal Records:-
Rundle,Walter. of Edmund and Eliza. Baptised 27 March 1881. Born 16 February 1881. Coastguard at Queensboro (Mouth of the Boyne) Beaulieu Parish. Co. Louth.

Rundle,Harold Redvers of Georhge and Emily. Bapt. 17 March 1907. Born 16 February 1907. Coastguard at Buncrana. Fahan Lr. Parish. Co.Donegal.
Obviously more than two Coastguards in the family.
Regards
Tony

Thanks for your work Tony. I should have known some of this, as the family has been researched extensively by Tammy Vallee of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Edmund Rundle, it turns out, was buried two days (May 16, 1933) later in a rather fancy grave in St. Pancras Churchyard, Honicknowle Lane, Pennycross, Plymouth, Devonshire (where he was born). Now rather overgrown. He was born Feb 13, 1845, and so was a ripe old 88 at death.
Sorry for the bother!
