I have an ancestor Michael Hall, in the navy from August 1833 to February 1836 on the HMS Satellite, then transferred to the coastguard. I have traced him through the coastguard records ADM175 series from 1836 till retirement in 1853. I would appreciate any suggestions please as to where I should look next, to find his next of kin upon joining the navy, his place of birth/origin, and any other available information about an individual in the coastguard and/or navy? Thanks, Lesley |

Hi Lesley I'm afraid there is little chance of finding a next of kin from navy records, but that said there are 'allotment' records for HMS Satellite held by the National Archives (NA). If a man accepted that while at sea some of his wages would be paid back home to the family these records could answer one of your questions, however not every man did! Your next course of action would be to check Satellite's Muster Books for 1833-36 to see if these reveal any further information. Unfortunately this can only be done in person at the NA. Finally there is a pension application from a Michael Hall who served from 1833 to 1836 in the NA Catalogue (ADM 29/51/99). Only by ordering this will you know if it is your man for certain, but the fit looks good. From the catalogue you will see that he was 27 in 1833, which perhaps takes you one small step forward. Thanks Martin, I have the pension record already, I persuaded them to email the copy to me, they were going to charge me more for postage than for copying the one page otherwise. Unfortunately I cannot visit National Archives as I live in New Zealand, but I will see if I can get the allotment records. Regards, Lesley |
