Hi Martin, Thank you for your prompt reply, the information from National Archives at Kew is as follows: CUST 116/47 the dates start on 29th April 1852 and the last date 3rd December 1852. The examiner was a Charles William Harold, this was signed on 27 July 1852 in Tuam, Co. Galway. We actually do not believe that Maria Bertha Costello was born in Birmingham UK as she told my mother and two aunts that she was born on board a ship going from Ireland to England and that her mother died giving birth. In the 1851 census there are quite a lot of Costello's living in and around Birmingham and Liverpool so they could have been relatives and because John was a Coastguard he would have had to get someone to look after her. Thanks for your help Cheers Jen |

Jen I've had another look at the CG Nomination Books, based on a wider time-frame, and still cannot find JC. This, coupled with the fact that the NA document ref. you quote is for the Revenue Service, I'm inclined to think that your man worked for Customs and Excise, rather than the Coastguard Service. I'm afraid I know little about C&E records to advise you as to how to proceed. However, on the British Genealogy Forum there is a thread devoted to Coastguards and Customs Officers, so an enquiry there might elicit some advice. Martin |
