Coastguards Thomas Jago (Ireland) & Henry Jago
iainp
Following on from previous posts via the old forum I am seeking information on Thomas Jago and now Henry Jago who both served in the Coastguard. Thomas served in Ireland where he was recorded as boatman Malahide 1865, coastguard Kilkeel 1867, station Officer Rosslare 1873-5 and Chief Officer Carnsore 1876-84. In particular I am seeking more info on his date & place of birth and parents. According to Thomas’s marriage certificate his father Henry was also a coastguard but this is the only info I have of his parents or siblings.

Thomas married Maria Bryden in Carlingford, Louth 1852 with children Annabella Catherine b1853, Alfred b?, Elizabeth b?, Thomas Bishop b1861 (my GGF), James Bryden b1865, Robert Broadrick b1867 & Lucretia Elleanor b1869 and we think at least 1 other (male), name unkown

Information on any of the above would be greatly appreciated as would suggestions as to ways forward (or is it back?) with my research

Thanks

Can I ask where you obtained the information on Thomas's Coastguard Service, because to have this information suggests the use of naval records, which usually have a place and approx date of birth?

Much apreciated Tony.

I knew of the Hanton connection but not the marriage dates or indeed the fact that it was "Marie" Elizabeth as family only referred to her as Auntie Lizzie ! You've also extended the Hanton side by one genration by bringing in Mattias the father. Excellent.
The "Jagoe" one is interesting because of Henry, but will need further investigation to see if it is a correct fit. From previous research I think the Jago"e" is an entirely different family but cant be certain. Is there any indication as to where Henry originated Ireland or England? At some point my line were posted across from devon/Cornwall, but not sure which generation(s).

How / where did you get the info?

Thanks again

Martin,

Info on Thomas's service record was largely a result of postings and responses on the old forum which unfortunately didnt reveal date/place of birth. His full record would appear to be the way to go, but how can I get it?

Thanks

I do not know if you have tried this already, but below is a link to the National Archives online seaman's service records, where there are some possibles for your Thomas. I would be inclined to take a punt and purchase some of the more likely candidates (£3.50 each), and see if the service information you have gathered to date fits any of their records. For information the date referred to is approx year of birth.

If you do match a record you might be lucky, and there could be his previous CS number included, which would enable you to go backwards and establish previous naval service.

Re above I've had some mixed success using the automated link facility try this, just cut and paste this into your browser:

Thanks Martin,

I followed your suggestion and struck gold first time. This was confirmed when family talk of him having served on the "Vanguard" showed up as the first ship on his record as Chief Officer. Interestingly his birth was 27/6/1825 in Myrgo, Glandon Cork. So much for "family" thinking he was from Cornwall or else maybe they were a generation out!

Now I'm after any details of Henry Jago (Coastguard) in Cork in 1825 possibly born Cornwall, and other members of his family !

This now puts the Jagoe's of Cork in a different context

Thanks again

I am interested in a possible relative of these men, a Richard Jago. The details I have are below, but anything else would be welcome.

Roger

Jago, Richard George. Chief Boatman, HM Coastguard.
Born on 26 June 1835 in Saltash, Cornwall, Richard Jago joined the Royal Navy and was allocated CS number 12120 and subsequently official number 75301. He was serving aboard HMS Caesar as Captain of the Mizzen Top at the time of the 1861 English census. Having transferred to HM Coastguard, Jago served in a succession of Irish stations, being latterly based at Barna, Tarbert, Ballyvaughan, and Union Hall. Richard Jago was pensioned on 30 June 1891 (TNA ref: ADM 188/63).
