I wonder whetrher anyone can help me with two questions about John Carter Hawke, who is recorded as having served as a coastguard at Preston from May 1902 to October 1906. I understand that Preston is in County Down, but am unsure of the location of what I imagine is a long disused station. My second question refers to another item in John Carter Hawke's service record which refers to service at 'Wyke WSS' between October 1906 and May 1910. My impression is that 'Wyke' is not in Ireland, but perhaps in England or Wales. Any help will be greatly appreciated! |

I don't think there is a Preston in Co. Down see Tony list of stations http://www.coastg...icle_id=98 There was a Wyke Regis coastguard station in Dorset on the S. coast of England see http://www.genuki...Table.html. There is also a Preston coastguard station in Dorset a few miles to the east of Wyke Regis. From your other post - there are no likely looking civil records (birth, marriage, deaths) for Hawkes up to 1958 so I don't think the Hawkes stayed in Ireland. If you are interested in Helvick head station location the OSI has a good old maps service - click on following URL and then click on "Historic 6'" in the panel on lower right. http://maps.osi.i...3,587577,7 Edited by bpa on 01/12/2010 00:53 |

Thanks for that. You have confirmed my suspicion about Preston. Confusingly, John Carter Hawke's marriage certificate in 1904 refers to him as a coastguard 'of Preston Co Down'! Having now got JCH's naval record, it is clear that he started in the Coastguard Service at Weymouth, Preston and Wyke. |
