Can anyone help please with any info on my ancestor Thomas Crellin, who I have found out through your site, was a coastguard from 1820,s to mid 1830,s. In particular I would like to know where his son John was born, he was my great great grandfather and according to later census data he has said he was born in Peel IOM. According to John,s marriage certificate, his father Thomas was a shipwright. The date of this was 1852 in Liverpool, but I think, if I have the correct Thomas Crellin, he died before that date? What info would I need to access records from The National Archives of UK and Ireland? Thanks for this website, it has opened up a whole new avenue in my family history! Jackie |

Civil registration of Births, marriages and deaths only started in Ireland around 1847 and was very uneven in compliance until 1870's. For England and wales civil records there is a website for the GRO index http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ However you should look at the familysearch.org Records pages which consolidates many records including civil and church. http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home Enter John Crellin as the name and "England" as the location, then you need to let website prompt with a list of location and confirm "England, United Kingdom". Use Collection filter to limit source to say "Isle of Man" records. The result is a record reference which you can then use to get record details. Edited by bpa on 28/07/2010 13:02 |

Thanks for your reply bpa , I have looked for him on Free BMD pages without success. I am interested in finding out more of Thomas, as an IOM genealogy site suggested that John was born in Ireland which would tie in with Thomas being a coastguard in various locations there. It would be good to access the ADM records held by National Archives and I wondered how to go about this, Does this site also hold these records? I know there is info on Thomas as a previopus post on the forum requestedhelp in finding him. I have emailed the person concerned but she has nothing to add. Many thanks again |

From the other post on Thomas Crellin - he was in Ireland between 1823 and 1833. This any birth/baptism records will probably be church records. Not all church records exists anymore and records were not always complete. Except for an 1856 marriage of Mary Elizabeth dau of Thomas, I couldn't see any Irish Crellin records in Irishgenealogy, irishroot and familysearch website. In UK 1861 Census for Tranmere, Chesire there is a John Crellin age 33 born Ireland married to Mary with 4 children, eldest son Thomas and a daughter Dinah. This could be a good match as Thomas and Dinah are John's parent's name. An 1828 birth year would mean born in Co. Down. Unfortunately, the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census entry for the same family, John has his birthplace as Isle of Man so perhaps 1861 "Ireland" enrry is an error which can happen since the enumerator often filled in the form. Jackie I doubt that you will get much more information from the ADM 175 records than I posted on the previous thread. However, if you do wish to see them yourself they can be downloaded for free from the NA website, but be warned the files are extremely large (link below). http://www.nation...=0&j=1 To find which you need to download I would suggest consulting the index in the 'Articles' section of this site.
