Hi there I have just received the records (ADM29/70) of my ancestor Zechariah Foulson Nicholass from National Archives. It shows his Coast Guard Service as joining at aged 19, 11th July 1834: Ship (55): Hercules 11 July 1834 - 22 Nov 1836; 23 Nov 1836 - 1837 (Cause: shore) Ship (68): Prince Regent 14 March 1854 - 30 June 1854; 1 July 1854 - 22 Nov 1854 Ship (163): Royal Albert 23 Nov 1854 - 8 Aug 1856 From replies to other listers on this site this would suggest that he served in the Crimea... is this right and do you have any other info available on him... or can you suggest where I should now look? I am thinking that he died in Fishguard ,Wales, 10 Feb 1868... the age is right and he is described as Chief Boatman, Coast Gard service but no other confirming details. On the ADM 29/70 the last entry is given as "G. 19 May 1868"...Does this confirm that he had died????? With thanks Roberta New Zealand |

Hi Roberta, and welcome to the Forum. From my research of the CG records, it appears that Zach first entered the CG service from the Revenue Cruiser Camelion on 27 July 1847. Just out of interest I did a search of the 1841 Census and found Zach in Shanklin, on the Isle of Wight, described as a Coast Guardsman. To find out when he first entered Camelion a check would have to be made of her Muster Book in ADM 101 at the National Archives. From the information I have he was born in Deal, Kent around 1819. His first land based posting was Newcastle CGS in Ireland. He was removed from here to Lettermore (Kilkernon) on 14 October 1850 following his promotion to Commissioned Boatman. His next move was to Fair Hill on 12 May 1851 and then, on 19 October 1852 back to Lettermore. Following his promotion to Chief Boatman on 27 Dec 1859 he was transferred to Ballyvaughan. Unfortunately from 1862 to 1868 there is a gap in the Limerick (Galway) records. However, ADM 175/102 'Chief Officer Discharges' has him listed as having been Discharged Dead on 10 Feb 1868 from Ballymoney. Re his service during the Crimean War, he does appear on the Medal rolls for both the Baltic and Crimea Medals. He was awarded the Baltic for his service on Prince Regent, and the Crimea, with Sebastopol and Azoff clasps for Royal Albert. In addition he was awarded the Turkish Crimea Medal. He earned the Azoff clasp as part of the small boats crew in the attack on Taganrog. To read more I have done a short article elsewhere on the site. http://www.coastg...cle_id=269 If I can be of any further help please let me know. Regards Martin |

Thank you Martin This is all wonderful information and fills in many gaps. Yes Zach was born in Deal, baptised 20 Dec 1818. Between 1862 - 1868 he and family were still in Ireland as a daughter was born in County Clare c. 1863 and 2 more children born Gorey, Wexford in 1864 and 1867. Many thanks once again Roberta |

Grooms Father's name - Zechariah Nicholas, Bride's Father name - Thomas Griffiths. in 1854 a Thomas George Nicholas was baptised in Parish of St. Nicholas, Galway - father's name Zacariah Nicholas. In the England 1871 Census for Greenwich East - Hospital School and Infirmary there are entries Nicholas Zacariah age 13 Born Canamara, Ireland Nicholas, George A. age 11 Born Canamara, Ireland Canamara is probably Connemara which is the west Galway region. . Roberta It looks as if Zach married his bosses daughter (or is this a Zach jnr?). There was a Thomas Griffith, Chief Boatman, at Lettermore from December 1848 to 19 June 1857; he was then promoted to Chief Boatman in Charge, remaining at the same station until his retirement on 31 December 1862. pba Many thanks for the info.. iI did not realise that Zachariah and Anne had a son Thomas George born before Zach joined the Prince Regent. I am wondering if perhaps he died as they named their third son George Augustus. I have never found Thomas George in any census. Anne and family were in England by 1881 and as you say the boys Zach and George at Greenwich in 1871 Martin Yes Zach Foulson (sometimes Foulser) Nicholas did marry Anne Griffith... interesting to know that he was also a Coastguard. I am thinking that perhaps Anne had a brother William Griffith perhaps also a CG. William Griffith (of Slade, Fishguard) signed Zach's death record as Informant in attendance Many thanks to you both Roberta |

Anne Griffith was a sister of my gt Grandmother, Sophia. There must also have been a son, Wiliam as he was a witness to the marriage of my Gt Grandparents in Killannin Church on 2nd June 1859. That was the same church (now in ruins)in which Zechariah and Ann were married. William must have died before his father as he was not included amongst the family members who received the proceeds of the sale of the post office property at Fishguard in 1931.
