I recently discovered my great great grandfather served as a coastguard in Ballydavid, Co. Kerry. His name was George Ward, if anyone can tell me how to get more information on him, i.e. where he came from etc. I would be very grateful. |

Welcome to the Forum Rita. To answer your question, it would help if you can give an approximate time-frame. Regards Martin Edited by crimea1854 on 26/07/2009 19:09 |

My estimation is 1822 or thereabouts as his son was born 1826. I would really like to know where he came from originally and any other ifo. there might be. Many thanks. -- Edited by Philip on 30/07/2009 00:26 |

Hi Rita Using your date as starting point I checked the Establishment Book ADM 175/15 (page 347/380) and duly found him at Ballydavid. This has the rather cryptic note as the previous station 'RC Crookhaven, Boards Minute 14 May 1824'. Since there was no station indicated for a further onward transfer, I checked ADM 175/18 (page 159/454) this showed that he was discharged from Ballydavid and the CG Service on 17 March 1848. I did check the earlier Establishment Books, but could not find him. However, without a Nomination Number the only suggestion I can make is that you download ADM 175/76, which is the Nomination Book covering 1824, and see if this has an entry for George. All the above documents can be downloaded for free from the National Archives website. Sorry I can't be of more help. Regards Martin |

Not sure if u got my reply so I am going to repeat it. Many thanks for ur prompt response. I have a copy of the 1891 census for London for George Ward Jnr.and he gave his birthplace as Crookhaven and the year is 1826 so this ties in with ur research. What would the reason be for his fathers discharge do u think. I find this very intruiging. Once again many thanks. |
