I've just managed to find my ancestor's name on HMS Valiant's record book here http://www.nation...ssmethod=5 - hope the link works (available from TNA for nothing at the moment but be warned - it's a BIG file!). John M Quinn was stationed at Arran in the Galway Division. He joined the ship on 19 Nov 1869. Under the discharge details it says List 59.15 with a date of 30 [June?] 1872. The place underneath this is Barna (which is Galway). Anybody got any ideas about what List 59.15 could be? John Quinn's CS details have different entry and discharge dates (30 Sep 1869 and 31 Aug 1874 respectively). Could he have been posted to a different ship and the records are wrong? Just a thought! Cheers :-) Jo |

Hi Jo If you go back into the document you will see that each CG Station is divided into two list, one 'Fleet' and the other 'Civilian'. Against the printed 'Fleet List' at the top of the page you will see a hand written number. Now if you move to the left hand column against each mans name is a roll number. So 59 is the Fleet List number and 15 the man's number. If you now go to Barna CG station (page 237 of 423) you will find that this refers to JMQ. This is just a quick way to cross reference and track your mans movements, other than trying to find the CG Station by name. Regards Martin Edited by crimea1854 on 01/02/2009 08:47 |

Hi Martin I've just continued looking through the document before reading your message and found JMQ on the exact same page as you mention. It was late last night when I found his first entry and I was frustrated that the dates didn't match! Can you make out what it says in the Discharge column - it looks like Vd 2? Cheers Jo ![]() |

Jo This actually says 'Vol 2'. This normally indicates that the man was at that same station when the next Establishment Book was started. I have not checked the index, but I suspect that you need to download the next document in the series i.e. ADM 175/54, and pick up JQM career at Barna. Regards Martin |

Sorry folks. I've just answered my own question. I think it's Vol 2. I've just found JMQ on page 53 of ADM175/54. Jo ![]() |

Forgot to ask - should I be looking at any other of these free records for the period 1869-1874 for Valiant? Thanks Jo |

Jo Assuming JMQ remained in the same CG district, and that he had not been discharged, there appears to be one further record (ADM 175/55) before the trail will run cold. Unfortunately the records from the 1869-79 to the early 1900 (depending on the District) are missing, and you will have to rely on his Naval Service Record. Coming back to your earlier question around ADM 175/53, what concerned me was that his name does not appear in the index at the back. When looking for men in the past I've assumed that if the're not in the index they were not in that particular volume; a mistake on my part. Regards Martin |
