Gina Firstly let me say that this is outside my normal research area and time period. However, as I understand it you have again fallen into a bit of a black hole. Registration Tickets for all British merchant seamen were introduced in 1835, but these ceased in 1857 and were not reintroduced until 1913. This nicely brackets the period you are interested in! The Registration Ticket system was unpopular with seaman, and the Government felt that Crew Lists and Agreements submitted at the end of a ships voyage would suffice. The problem is that unless you know the name of at least one ship on which your man served it is almost impossible to get started. The other problem is that a number of different organisations hold these original crew lists and agreements e.g. NA, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and Maritime History Archive, Newfoundland. However, there is one possible avenue to start your research, and this is via the CLIP (Crew List Index Project) web link: http://www.crewli... But let me reiterate, this is not really my area. There may be more general genealogy sites on the Internet where you might be better asking this question. Regards Martin |
