I am looking for Patrick McNamee in West Cork. He was a coastguard based at Dunmanus Bay in West Cork and he was awarded a silver medal for bravery by the RNLI in 1851. I have located him when he was transferred to Castletown on 30 July 1838 from a place that I cannot decipher (something like “Sladlas Bay”]. This appears on ADM 175/18 [download page 135]. Does anybody know where this “Sladlas Bay” might be? I'd be delighted to find out any more info regarding him (my great great grandfather). Regards, Donal F Connon |

Donal welcome to the Forum. I think you will find he was at Studland Bay, Dorset. Martin |

Many thanks Martin. Unfortunately I cannot download 175/6 at the moment due to website problem. One of his sons, joseph, was in the RN and then joined the coastguard in c.1875. He was in Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim and Greencastle in Donegal. Are there any records for those stations at that time? |

You could try the ADM 175 series of Ships' record books for both the Kingstown and Limerick Districts. They almost come to an end by the time your man joins, but worth a shot. Can I suggest if you do give them a try that they are generally indexed by surname at the end of the volume, although they sometimes have two indexes, one for Fleet men and the other for Civilians, i.e. men no longer eligible to serve in the fleet. For the period you are interested in most men's service record has to be relied on. As an aside there was a Joseph McNamee (born c1813) who served as a Coastguard and was recalled during the Crimean War, serving with the Baltic Fleet - a possible relative? Martin |

Martin, My understanding is that your Joseph McNamee (born c1813) was a brother of my Dunmanus McNamee. Can you email me with your info on him please. I have knowledge of him at Weymouth and St Osyth. Donal |

I have the following information on Joseph: born Westport, Mayo, 17 March 1813 served on HMS Cressy, Ships No.190, and was awarded the Baltic Medal. He was also issued with a merchant seamen’s ticket in 1845 while serving at Warbarrow CGS, Ticket No.144449. Cressy’s description book was one of the only to include a date and place of birth for those CGs’ who served in the navy. The Ticket is available on the pay to view site Find my Past, and apart from details about the man’s date and place of birth they generally include a physical description. Martin |

Martin, I can't find Joseph McNamee (born c1813) on Find My Past. Can you forward me the webpage URL please. Patrick McNamee from Dunbeacon, Cork had a daughter called Anne who married Michael Shanahan in 1857 and they immigrated to Australia shortly afterwards. They are the great great great grandparents of the famous Wimbledon doubles champion Peter McNamara (1955-). |

Donal Like you I'm having trouble accessing ADM 175/6, so I've come at the problem from a different direction. ADM 175/97 is the index of nominations, this shows Patrick joining the CG Service from - I assume - his home town of Westport, with a first posting to Prussia Cove (ADM 175/97 pdf 119) Nom. No.2706. You could look at this station and work forward to Poole Harbour. Martin |

Martin, You have utterly demolished my genealogical brick wall. I wanted evidence to show that Patrick came from Westport (he spent a lot of time at Bantry, Cork) and you have provided that. Many thanks, Donal |
