John Ost ( 1822-1899)- Coastguard
This old and scruffy photo is almost certainly of John Ost, Coastguard , who was born in Cork in 1822 and who died in Westport, Mayo in 1899. He served as a Coastguard around the west coast of Ireland and settled on Achill Island where he and his wife Elizabeth( nee Brown(e) raised a family of 10 children. He is buried in Dugort. We think that his medals might be the Baltic Medal, and a RN Good Conduct Medal, although I really have no idea , and am open to other suggestions....but they aren't clear to see details.

On the left is the RN Long Service Good Conduct Medal and the right is certainly the Baltic Medal.

Thanks for your confirmation of that, Martin. Have you noticed that this photo and the one to the left on page 3 of Portraits, were taken in same studio ?? I wonder if these two men ever worked together ?.....Kilmeny
