John Phillips, Boatman, HM Coast Guard
HughVaugh
Here are images of the Long Service and Good Conduct medal awarded to John Phillips, Boatman.

I have narrowed the recipient down to one of two men. When I have reduced the possibilities to one I shall add more information about him.

Until then I thought it might be nice to show everyone the medal.

All the Best

Hugh welcome to the Forum.

I'm not sure if 'medals' are your thing, and you may already know this, so forgive me.

The 'Impressed' name of LSGC medals commenced in March 1877, however Captain Douglas-Morris in his book 'The Naval Long Service Medals' tabulated the subtle changes in the rigging, pennant and Ensign on Victory as the die was changed. These he categorised as Types E, F, G, GG, H & J, each of which relate to a date range of issue.

If you can get hold of a copy of this book, and with the help of a magnifying glass identify which Type your award is, this may assist you in establishing the correct identity of your man.

Martin,

Thanks for taking the time to help me out, but, yes I have a copy of Douglas-Morris' book.

I've identified it as a "GG". The only trouble is I have two John Phillips Coast Guards awarded the LS&GC between '83 and '91.

I am leaning towards one simply because the other chap's LS&GC is Traced 1.8.90 and his rating changes from Boatman to Commissioned Boatman on 7.7.90. I just hope that his medal would have been impressed with his new rank, but the dates are so close.

Ken,

Thanks. I hope I've narrowed it down to one, as explained above.

Hello all,

I've bitten the bullet and decided that this is most likely the John Phillips awarded this particular medal.

The document is from The National Archives, ADM 188/37. Register of Sailors' Services

I suspect that you have already found this info on the Genuki website, but just in case you haven't, this appears to be your man.

Phillips, John DEV 1848 - Devonport 1881 IRL
1891 East Looe CON - Wife: Susannah, 1849, Devonport, DEV. Children: Maud & William, 1878 & 1879, Devonport, DEV; Caroline & Jessie & Selina & Susannah, 1881 & 1883 & 1884 & 1885, all Cork, Co Cork, IRL.

It certainly ties in with the service record details.

Hugh, I'm wondering if your chap may also have a ADM 139 file given the 1 January 1873 start date on the AM 188 records? Just a thought.
