My GGrandfather, George Henry Barton, was born on the Isle of Wight in 1850, joined the RN in 1868, transferred to the Coast Guard on 1877. He was stationed at Kessingland, Suffolk, in 1877, then Reculvers and finally, Herne Bay, in 1894. Reculvers and Herne Bay are both in Kent. I have been unable to find out anything at all about these stations apart from their location on contemporary maps. I would really appreciate any information, drawings, or accounts of life in any of these Coast Guard Stations. Sandra |

Hi Sandra I don't know if you are registered with Ebay, but I have found that for some reason CG Stations tend to feature in old postcards, that either as an original, or as a repro, can be bought off Ebay. Having read GBH's service record I saw he was stationed at Hole Haven, on Canvey Island in Essex. There is a very good image of the CG station and watch tower available at the moment on Ebay, Item 360020213796, and another for Reculvers 130189410097. In the Reculvers picture the CG cottages are on the immediate right of the twin signal towers. The Hole Haven cottages still exist, and are protected from alteration or demolition as 'Listed Buildings'. However, behind them now is an oil terminal, and in front a caravan park! Regards Martin PS: the ribbon is in the post. |

Thank you for that. I actually have a copy of the Reculvers photo, though I didn't know about the coastguard cottages. I shall get my son to follow up the Hole Haven one. Your advice and information is much appreciated. Sandra ![]() |

Just a small detail, but it's actually RECULVER rather than Reculvers. But the really nice thing is, and I really do thank you, that I have only just looked at this site for the first time today, and you have already assisted me in a small matter. I have been looking at my wife's side, Michael Power 1812 (Ramsgate, Oldstairs, Deal, Kingsdown) from Waterford, and on one of the census records it shows Kessingland, Waterford. I had taken that to be a place in the Waterford area but could find no trace of a Kessingland there. Your message referring to the area in Suffolk and other peoples contributions, which refer to the rotation of coastguards, for varied reasons, has been a great help. The connection with Kessingland may well solve the issue of why I cannot find a trace of him in the 1861 census. Thank you. |
