Orphans

While my ggrandfather was serving on HMS Valiant at Shannon in 1872, his wife died, leaving behind their 6yo son and 5yo daughter. She was living some distance away, at Ballycastle, Mayo, near the coastguard station. The records show that my ggrandfather continued service on the Valiant for more than another 10 years. I have two questions:

1. What would have happened to such children, who effectively were orphaned? Orphans of seamen killed in action received a pension, but what about their type of case, where it was the mother who died?

2. Some 10 years or so later, the son who had been bereaved entered shipwright apprenticeship, apparently in Donegal. He later was shipwright on lightships in Cork and Down. My question is whether his apprenticeship might have been in a coastguard/RN scheme? Was there such a scheme, catering for impoverished/unfortunate children of seamen?

Finally, on a happy note, the father (now in RN pension) and his son and daughter lived together again, in Glasgow in 1891.

Thanks for any info.
Dave
