Andrew Tully
Hyde
I am searching for information about my ancestor, Andrew Tully, who shows on his daughter's wedding information (Catherine Tully) in Antrim as retired.
Irish Roots page shows him as retired from the Coastguard, yet I can find no reference to him on this site.
Does anyone have any information? I am trying to find out where he was born, when, & the name of his wife for family research.
With thanks,
Lou

Welcome to the Forum Lou.

The information you provided lacked one vital piece of information, and that is a date. It would also be helpful if you know where in Antrim Catherine married, since both could help with knowing where to best look for Andrew Tully.

Thank you for your quick response. Catherine Tully married John Horzmann Howell in Belfast in 1855, and her father Andrew was a widower at that time. I presume he was born in the 1790's. Irish Roots has him in 1866 as late of H.M. Coastguards.

I've done some preliminary research and now know that Andrew joined the Coastguard Service in 1831, having previously been rated a Steward on the Revenue Cruiser Chance, with a first posting to No.1 Battery, Dover.

After a number of moves he transferred to Lambay Island, Ireland, on 20 June 1840. I'm just about to go out to dinner, so will do some further work later today - so watch this space!

I've completed my search of the Establishment Books, and can now provide details of his full CG Career.

Nomination to No.1 Battery 1831 (ADM 175/5 pdf 213)
(?) to Grand Redoubt (175/5 - 217)
16 August 1832 to Tankerton (175/6 - 71) following promotion to Commissioned Boatman.
8 May 1835 to Poole Harbour
22 June 1835 to Studland Bay (175/6 -340)
20 June 1840 to Lambay Island
18 Dec 1843 to Larne (175/18 - 444)
10 May 1849 to Whitehouse (175/19 - 376)
6 Aug 1853 to Ballygally (175/19 - 384)
30 Nov 1853 Discharged with an allowance of £30.

None of the above provides any family information, but I did check the Merchant Seamen's Tickets on Find my Past, and in the index (BT114) was an Andrew Tully born Donegal, frustratingly I could not find his actual ticket (No.141,802 - in BT113).

Since these tickets were issued to the CG's at the same station all at the same time I tried to find his ticket using other men with whom he worked - there being four men on a page. Finally using Thomas Cunningham, born Donegal 1803 I found his entry, but it is impossible to read! I can only suggest that you approach the National Archives, and ask if they can supply a better copy.

If you can get to the National Archives at Kew it could also be worth consulting Chance's Muster Book (ADM 119/19), this might supply some additional information about his early career.

Knowing where he worked I checked Ancestry and found the following entry:
Name: Stephen John Tully
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 3 Jul 1839
Christening Place: Studland, Dorset, England
Father's Name: Andrew Tully
Mother's Name: Margaret

Stephen Tully was issued with a birth certificate, which would have his mother's maiden name; July-Sept 1839, Wareham, Dorset, Vol 8, page 115.

Hope some of the above helps.

Martin, you are a wonder! I can't thank you enough.
Through family Search org I have now found that Andrew Tully married Margaret Robson, and so can pursue my enquiries further.
Your information is a door to future investigation. I hope one day to return to England, & will definitely check the sources you mention.
Once again, thank you SO much,
Lou
