My g g grandfather was Nicholas Vine and he served as a Coastguard at Tarbert Co Kerry about 1842. He had retired from the Navy. His son Nicholas was born in 1844 and is listed as birthplace Tarbert. Does anyone know of any history for this place or of Nicholas Vine as a Coastguard. Any information appreciated to tell us more about this part of his life.

Welcome to the Forum. Nicholas entered the CG service having been nominated from HMS Cornwallis on 17 Feb 1837, with a first posting to Kilkee (ADM 175/18 pdf 187); he subsequently made the following moves: 11 Sept 1839 to Tarbert (175/18 pdf 179) 16 Oct 1848 to Kilcredane (175/18 pdf 145) 7 Oct 1850 to Isle of Arran (Punishment) (175/19 pdf 197) 7 Sept 1858 Discharged with pension of £220/annum (175/19 pdf 210). The National Archives appear to hold his pension papers. These will list his service from first entry into the Navy in 1822 at 18 until his retirement in 1858. These are in ADM 29/60/90. He was issued with a Seaman's Ticket - No.44,780, but frustratingly the only information it contains is his name, and that he was serving at Tarbert. Finally, although I have not previously picked him up in my research, I believe he served as a Quartermaster on HMS Calcutta during the Crimean War. This mans Baltic Medal was sent to the Galway CG District in 1857, and at the time Nicholas was working at Isle of Arran CGS, which falls within the Galway District. If you do order his pension docmuents, and we can establish for certain it is the same man, I will add his details to my database of CG who served in the Crimea. Martin |

Thank you so much Martin, after you gave us this information , we have found so much about my g g grandfather,Nicholas Vine. We have now discovered 3 more children, two born in Ireland while he was serving on the Coastguard. We have so much more to go on now. Can you tell us if his wife Jane and the children would have lived with him on these stations, I notice when he was "sent" to Aran Islands , Inishmore, he rented a house. There were other coastguard officers mentioned on the same page. I intend to add photos of each station he worked at and the ships he served on to our family tree. It humbles me to think no one had even heard of his son Samuel for over 150 years until we discovered him again. The Vine family , even in Australia, has their roots firmly entrenched in the Navy and the sea. So this history is very important to us all. Anne

I'm pleased that the information has enabled you to 'leaf' out your tree. At the time Nicholas was working most CG's lived with their families in rented accommodation. Being moved as a punishment, which usually occurred because of drink or insubordination, meant him having to meet his,and his families own removal costs, which was seen as part of the punishment. The pension papers I referred too can be ordered from the National Archives, although you cannot download them instantly as with the Seamans Service Record. If you do order them I would be really grateful if you could confirm that the N Vine who served during the Crimean War is one and the same man. Martin |

We will look into ordering his records, and certainly happy to send the information on to you. Do you know if there were ever any photos taken of the Coastguard staff? We have no photos at all of this generation. Anne
