Does anyone know of a coastguard station on Innishue now spelt Innishoo in Clew Bay, in 1840? I'm trying to trace a relative Isaac Hall who was there with his family sometime between 1838 and 1847 as a coastguard. The family don't appear on the GB 1841 census but in 1851 they were back in Cornwall, where they originally came from, near Falmouth. Any information would be gratefully received. |

There is an island in Clew Bay called Inishoo a little north of Rabbit Island. Using "Explore Map" on the OSI web site you can see the old 1840s and 1860s maps . On both maps (25" and 6" ) a coastguard station is shown. Try this URL sometimes they don't work - if it shows a map of islands click on the 6" in the control panel http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,490155,791181,5,7 If the URL does not work - Go to http://www.osi.ie and then click "Explore Maps" and then change the last part fo the URL to #V1,490155,791181,5,10 This should zoom onto the island. To see old maps cliock on 6" or 25" in the control panel edit: Inishgowla is next island to the east of Inishoo. Inishmore is next island to the south of Inishoo. In th establishment books there is a coastguard station called Inishgowla which was later renamed to Inishmore and there is no coastguard station on either of these islands. In Adm 175/17 (PDF page 240) there is an Isaac Hall on Inishgowla transferred from Eastferry in May 1837 and in ADM 175/18 PDF pg 224 Isaac Hall in 1846 is transferred from Inishgowla to St. Marves (?). Thank you so much for your help in traving Isaac Hall! He returned to St Mawes near Falmouth which all adds up to my family research and with his family are on the 1851 census as living nearby. I'm about to look at the relevant maps. Thank you again. Megwp |
