Fred Randall - Coastguard at Waterford
gemmaallen1977
Hi

I am wondering if anybody might be able to help me. My great great grandfather is Fred Randall, a coastguard in the 1901 census in Waterford, Ireland. I would love to know more about his time as a coastguard and yet I can't seem to find any records for him? Would anybody be able to advise if there are records or where I could look for them? I don't know his date of birth or his place of birth. Going by the 1901/1911 census records it states that he was English (not Irish what my family had always thought).

Any help that anyone can give me would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Gemma

Gemma welcome to the Forum.

Your Gt Gt Grandfather should have a Naval Service Record that can be downloaded from the NA website.

In the hope that he might still be serving during WW1 I checked the medal roll and found a Fred Randall, Leading Boatman, who was awarded just the British War Medal. Using the service number on the roll I checked the service records and found a Fred Randall, 106945, born 1863 Roadhill, Wiltshire. Going back to the Irish census in 1901 he gives his age as 37, which would make his date of birth around 1864.

On this evidence you might risk the £3.36 to download this mans record, and if in 1901 it shows him serving at Bonmahon, Waterford you have your man.

Hi Martin

Thank you so much, I have downloaded the record from the NA and yes, this must be my great great grandfather Fred as he is in Bonmahon in the late 1890s!! I really appreciate your help, I had found his two son's naval records on the NA but I was a bit stuck with Fred's and now I also have his record and date of birth.

Thanks again,

Gemma
