Coastguards from Ireland/England
mikelmouse
Hi
I have just discovered after lots of research that my 4x Great grandfather John Hayes was from Tipperary. Unfortunately I don't know where about!
He was a Coastguard/HM Customs Officer from 1841-1881 (I think).
He was born in 1811 married in abt 1836 to Margaret Raffaty from Limerick and I only discovered he was from Tipperary when asking on a the cheshire websites about census data. I had the family from 1841,51,61,81,91 as living in Devon, Hoylake here in Wirral and Birkenhead also in Wirral.
I am assuming his work brought him here from Ireland. My question is: Are there any records that will indicate where about John Hayes came from so I can research further. It would have to have been about 1836/37 that he came here as his eldest son was born in Stoke Dameral, Devon in 1837. I cannot find a marriage record here in the U.K so far!

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Regards

Mike Hayes

Hi, and welcome to the Forum.

Using the Coastguard Establishment Books I've traced John Hayes CG Career. He entered the CG service on 29 January 1840, having been nominated from HMS Talavera, with a first posting to Dawlish (ADM 175/6 pdf 410). The Talavera from March 1836 until December 1839 was with the Mediterranean Fleet, and in 1840 was destroyed by fire in Devenport dockyard.

On 2 May 1840 he was transferred to Teignmouth; 24 March 1841 to Exmouth; 19 July 1850 back to Teignmouth, and then in February 1858 to Hoylake where he remained until pensioned on 16 October 1869 (ADM 175/58 pdf150). At some point after 1858 he was removed from the 'Fleet' List to the 'Civilian' list indicating that he was no longer fit for further service at sea.

However, Talavera was not the last ship he served on. During the Crimean War (1854-55) he was one of the 2600 CG's who entered the Navy. He served on HMS Edinburgh as an Able Seaman (ships No.102), for which he was awarded the Baltic Medal.

To answer your specific question you could try visiting the National Archives at Kew and consulting the Muster or Description Books for Talavera and Edinburgh (ADM 38/8019) these may provide some additional information.

Martin
