I have just become a new member. My late husband Brendan Jones before he died 2 years ago, was trying to find any records of Samuel Jones & his son Samuel Edward as both were coastguard men. He did succeed in getting details of Samuel Edward's second marriage to Margaret Wallace in Portnoo, Co.Donegal 1880,he was 44 & she was22. Recently while searching the census I discovered he was born in Co.Cork. The family were Church of Ireland. Any thoughts on how to find out more about his birth. Would appreciate any help. Carmel Jones Merged on 09/12/2011 19:40:33: Hi Carmel You will see that I have moved your question to the Forum to make it more widely read. I did trace Samuel Snrs career to a point where it began to ring bells. From below you will see that I had already traced his service for a descendent of Samuel on another website. Since both the question and my reply are likely to be of interest to you I am providing a link to this site. http://www.rootsc...018.0.html Additionally I am also providing a link to the National Archives website that has two service records for Samuel Jnr. One is pre, the other post 1873. Neither will provide any family information, but may give clues as to where to look for other records. The man you are interested in claims to have been born in Cloyne on 25 April 1834. At the time Samuel Snr was stationed at Ballycotton, not far-away on the coast. http://www.nation...diaarray=* Since Samuel Jnr. will have served in the Navy prior to entering the CG Service, if you can provide a list of his ships, and the dates he served on them, I will check to see if I can provide any additional information, such as any medal entitlement.
