Hi I don't know if anyone can throw any light on a Patrick Sweeney for me, born 17th March 1832, on Spike Island, Cork. The reason I ask is that an internet search suggests that Spike Island was a prison as well as being the location of a Coast Guard Station - now if Sweeney was born on the Island was it to a convict, prison guard or a Coast Guard? Sweeney subsequently entered the Royal Navy in 1849, as a Boy 1st Class, went on to see service in the Crimea and was wounded during the Second China war. He finally became a Coast Guard in Cheshire, retiring on a pension in Sept. 1876. Martin |
