Many thanks for such a valuable, educational and enjoyable site. However, I am struggling with two ancestors – William and his father John! 1. William Gransden (born around 1808 we don’t know where) married in Aug 1836 in Co Galway giving his occupation as “Revenue Cutter Dolphin”. I have tracked his subsequent career in ADM 175 files, from boatman in Mannin Bay (1838 transfer from Dolphin) to Port Terlin (commissioned boatman), Buncranna, Rutland, Guidore, Innishcrone to superannuation in 1859. His first wife died and he remarried in 1850 giving his occupation again as “Coastguard” and giving his father, John’s, occupation also as Coastguard. William had more children but not for 10 years into the second marriage, starting after his discharge. These are about the only records I have of William before he died in 1872 noted to be a “superannuated coastguard”. I am fairly sure his roots are in England, but I can find no relevant Dolphin records, nor Navy Records. 2. On John Gransden there is only a John Robert Gransden (Master) on the Navy Lists, born 1782 in England, commissioned 1811 and on Lists up to 1827 (but not 1834,40,41). He called himself an “officer in the navy” in a document dated 1829 while living in Deptford, England. I think he died in 1862 in England. I doubt he went to Ireland and that William is his son. I think he is a red herring. 3. However, I have a probate record for another John Gransden dated 1827 in Harwich, Essex, stating John Gransden was “late a mariner at sea”. That’s all. I’ve had no luck searching for wills at TNA. 4. Most Gransdens are from Kent and are rare in Ireland where they are almost entirely related to William. So I am struggling with how he got there and why there are no records of John. Can I kindly ask for guidance on what to ask for at Kew if there is no more information on-line relating to William on the Dolphin and earlier (musters I presume) and anything on John, I’d also be interested on social background information of how families stayed together during changing postings that might account for the delay in William’s second family starting. (The variants are Grandsden, Grantsden, Gransdon and even Grausden). Many thanks for any help. Bill Gransden |

Hi Bill, and welcome to the Forum. If you intend to visit the National Archives I would look at the Muster Book for Dolphin (ADM 119/30). Starting from the date William entered the CG Service you should be able to trace his career back to the point that he joined the Revenue Service, which might provide a clue as to where he was from originally. If, as I have found in the past, men have moved from one Revenue Cruiser (RC) to another, and you want to continue tracing his movements, enter the RC name in the Catalogue search field, and ADM 119 in the series box to find the next document you will need to order. I will have a look to see if I can find John, but to be honest without a starting point to go on I don't hold out much hope. Martin |

Many thanks Martin for such a prompt reply to a convoluted question! I'll keep fingers crossed. Bill |
