James Robinson stationed at Cloghy 1911
Leona Frayling
James is my g grandfather. He was married to Annie and had several children of which Mabel was my grandmother. I have been trying to find out more about his career in the coastguard but am not sure how to access all the info. He obviously moved around quite a bit as several of the children were born in different places. Mabel for instance was born in Waterford and his wife was born in Cork. I would like to get any further info of his career and also get birth info for Mabel and also marriage info for his marriage to Annie. All suggestions are welcome. By the way this is a great site and so interesting!!

Hi Leona, and welcome to the Forum

For the period you're interested in your best bet is to download his service record from the National Archives website. Since the name is quite common - no slight intended - you really need to know where and when, at least the year, he was born.

I attach a link to the search facility on the NA's site:

http://www.nation...ueryType=1

To make life easier once you have the list, click on 'date' at the head of that column, and this will reorganise the list into birth date order. Also there could be two records for the same man, one pre, the other post 1873 - you need to download both.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Martin. I have enjoyed this site very much, looking through articles and reading the forums, so much history and it paints a different picture. I have searched the Archives and there are so many James Robinsons that it is unbelievable, what were their parents thinking of! However on the 1901 census he says he is from Derry aka Londonderry and is 48 years old and is listed as a Chief Boatman in charge of Coast Guards. Now I know people bend the truth on these forms but I still, even with info cannot find him.

Church and civil birth records may provide some help.

You can buy online transcription of church (and some civil) records from www.rootsireland.ie This can be expensive so you need to narrow down possibiltiies wheneber [possible.

Civil records started around 1847 but were not complete until about 1870s. You can check the Civil record index at pilot.familysearch.org

There were 11 James Robinsons baptised in Co Derry between 1847 and 1857 . Since an eldest son in your Robinson family is William this is often the same name as the child's paternal grandfather. There is 1 James Robinson's baptism in 1847 where the father's name was William.

There are no civil records for Mabel Robinson born Waterford in 1892. The close matches are Elizabeth Mabel Robinson born in Dublin 1892 or Anne Maria M Robinson b 1892 Waterford.

There are civil record (Inishowen district) for Walter and Francis Robinson b 1897 in Donegal father James mother Eliza ?
There is a ciivil record (Inishowen district) for Frederick Hencry Charles Robinson b 1895 father James.

I suggest buying one of the civil record and find the mother maiden name. The birth records should confirm father's occupation and address so you can check it is the right Robinson. Then you can look for a marriage record probably a few years before birth of eldest child.

edit:
corrected typo of birth year records for Mabel.
Also I thought James was eldest son in family - in fact it was William so I have changed the text accordingly.

Since both William was born in Cork and James' wife was Annie/Eliza was also born in Cork - it would make sense to first look at Cork record for marriage but most of the church records are not online. There are at least 2 marriage records for James robinson in Cork in 1879 and 1884.

Well I've tried all the routes I can think of to find your man, but without any success. All I can suggest is that there is a service record for a James Robinson, born 1852, from Belfast, service number 72280, and that you risk £3.50 and download his record in the hope that there is some match with what you already know - other than that I'm stumped!
