Hello, my name is Bruce Rioch and am starting to really track down my ancestry. Robert Rioch is my Great Great Grandfather, son of Andrew Rioch and Susan Ritchie. When Robert RIOCH was born on January 17, 1816, in Montrose, Angus, Scotland, his father, Andrew, was 29 and his mother, Susan, was 20. He married Jane Bain on December 28, 1838, in Nigg, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. They had 12 children in 21 years. He died on January 17, 1897, in Cottown, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, having lived a long life of 81 years. 1841 - Name - Robert Riach Age - 25 Estimated Birth Year - 1816 Gender - Male Where born - Scotland Civil parish - Slains County - Aberdeenshire Address - Court Guard Hution Colliston Occupation - Maid Seaman 1861 • Coast Guard Stations Chief Officer's House (no 5), Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland Comm Coast Guard Boatman any information would be appreciated, thank you Bruce Rioch |

Hi Bruce According to his very brief RN service record he was born 17 January 1816, this can currently be downloaded for free from the National Archives and provides a physical description as well as info on his last date of service ( 27 Sept 1874 ). https://discovery...r/D6608237 I checked the CG establishment books and he first joined the landbased CGs in August 1848, having previously served as a mariner on the Flying Fish Revenue Cruiser, with a first posting to St Osyths Tower in Essex (ADM 175/7 pdf 710). On 17 May 1849 he moved along the coast to St Osyths Stone Point (175/7 pdf 708). On 3 June 1850 he was transferred to St Lawrence CGS on the Isle of Wight from where he was moved on 23 July 1852 to Collieston (175/7 pdf 320). It was here that he was promoted to Commisioned Boatman - equivalent to an Able Seaman - on 29 Jan 1859 (175/22 pdf 54). You might also like to know that he was one of the GC's who entered the RN during the Crimean War, serving on HMS Monarch and HMS Orion as an AB, for which he received the Baltic Medal. You can access it on Ancestry - pay to view - or order it direct from the National Archives for a fee. He first joined the Revenue Cruiser Cheerful on 26 June 1841.
