I am trying to track down information on Charles Barnes, my Great Great Grandfather. I know he was born in England and that he was stationed at Portmuck in Islandmagee in 1901 (from the census). Earlier in his career I am assuming he was somewhere in Co. Derry/Londonderry as his children on that census have that listed as their birthplace. The following website http://www.lennon...ISLANDMAGE has him listed as the Chief Officer of the Portmuck coastguard station. If anyone has any leads where I can hunt for further information or access to any more info about his career it would be much appreciated. |

Hi and welcome to the Forum. Given the period of his service your best bet is to download his service record from the National Archives. Below is a link to all Charles Barnes; look at the date column, this is the date of birth he gave when he signed on for Continuous Service. http://www.nation...5Fdate+asc Martin |

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I'll download that and have a look to see what I can piece together. Merged on 07/07/2011 18:57:20: I think I've found him: Name Barnes, Charles Official Number: 47289 Place of Birth: Salisbury, Wiltshire 1851 His DOB is different to the other records I have for him (just out by a couple of years so not too worrying!) but I know he was born in Wiltshire and served at Portmuck. I just have to try and interpret the records that I have downloaded. Many thanks again. Edited by poppyscarlet on 07/07/2011 18:57 |
