My great grandfather Robert Caddye Coastguard was married to a Margaret Greer. They married in Ardfert, Co Kerry in 1881 . Her father's name was given as Chas. Greer Coastguard Fenit and one of the witnesses to the marriage was William Greer and the other was Lizzie Bailey ( Elizabeth Anne ) who was her sister. On the birth certificate of my Grandfather Charles James Caddye the person who gave the information was listed as Larry Greer . Now I am trying to locate this family . In the 1901 Census and the UK 1911 Census Margaret Caddye (Greer) gives her place of birth as Co. Donegal . I also know that this family of Greer's were connected to the Starks. Can anyone help Danny |

Have you checked this thread and the other URLs it provides ? http://www.coastg...mp;pid=596 It doesn't have a "Margaret" as a daughter but a lot of other info fits so perhaps there is a missing record. I have a coastguard relative whose daughters entered the wrong place of birth in their Census entries . My guess is their father father got them mixed up and told them the wrong place of birth. To get birth records I had to use the coastguard postings to narrow down where to look for birth records. Even then a few were missing and it is in the same timeframe as your relative 1860-1870s |

I have not been on the site recently so I missed your message, from what I have found out that most of the family came from Dunfanaghy in Donegal, there was a big coast guard station there at Horn Head (I think it was) and as lot of the locals appeared to have joined up. My family roots appears to be from a Charles Greer born around 1800, it was a big family as was the norm in those days, there was a Margaret in the family but as she was born in 1833 it looks as though she would have been too old for the person you are looking for. There is another part of the family which stems from Charles brother who I think it is Alexander, they also had coastguard connections and some very similar family christian names which causes a lot of confusion. My 2nd GGrandfather Charles married a Francis Start in 1855, and not sure how but the wedding was in London,, her father was also a coastguard. which was probably how they met. Due to the loss of records in Ireland it is very difficult to trace a lot of the family, I have been lucky in that some of them moved to England and that has given me more details. If there is any help I can give please contact me Colin Greer kavanagh |
