The subject is my wife's 3x Grt.Grandfather who marrried Mary Ann Carr at Minster, Isle of Sheppey, Kent 9/2/1833. Shortly after they appear to have moved to Ireland where they had two children, John C. in1835 and Mary Ann Jane in 1838 before returning to Sheerness, Kent. The 1851 census finds the family (now extended to 5 children) at Amble in Northumberland but Thomas is absent. Mary says she is a 'Coastguards Wife'. From Thomas's links to Ports round the country I assume he was an established Coastguard until about 1860 when he has remarried and back in Grimsby. Will be grateful for any info on him/family or what is the best place to research his career? Regards eric |

Hi Eric, and welcome to the Forum. Using the ADM 175 records I have now constructed Thomas Hutchinson's Coast Guard career. He appears to have entered the CG Service when paid off from HMS Southampton. Although the Nomination Record (Nom. No. 4037 - ADM 175/78 pdfs 12 & 13) says late 'Southampton', a little further research has shown that the ship of the same name returned to Sheerness on 3 January 1833, and Hutchinson was nominated on 29 Jan 1833, a little too much of a coincidence. To confirm this, and to perhaps find out more about his earlier naval career, you could consult her Muster Book at the National Archives (ADM 37/8360). In any respect he was posted to Kingsdown (ADM 175/6 pdf 118). He then made the following moves: 5 April 1834 to Dunkeehan 23 May 1835 to Claggen (ADM 175/18 pdf 217) 19 July 1838 to Fairlight (ADM 175/6 pdf 192) 10 June 1840 to Enchantress, Rye (ADM 175/6 pdf 219) 26 Oct 1843 to Alnmouth (ADM 175/7 pdf 582) 23 December 1848 to Poor Head (Ireland) - Punishment 19 November 1851 Discharged on a pension of £15 4/- (ADM 175/19 pdf 90) Enchantress: http://www.ryehar...ber218.asp Out of interest there is a pension application on the NA Website that looks to be a good contender for your man (ADM 29/47/51). You could take a chance and order this from the NA, which takes about three weeks, if I'm right this would have his service details from 1829 to 1833. I hope this answers your question. Hi Martin, a pleasure to be a new member. Thank you very much for your prompt reply with all your interesting information. I need time to digest this but would you know if his 3 years at POOR HEAD would be spent under 'Punishment' or some other capacity? Was the C.G Service at that time seperate from the R.N. but subject to Naval discipline? Eric |

Eric The CG came under Admiralty control following the Crimean War in 1856, prior to this it was administered by Customs and Excise. The punishment was the actual transfer. Apart from the fact that CGs stationed in Ireland were paid less than their colleages on the mainland, the man had to pay his own removal expenses. Martin |

Martin, Finally received details of ADM/29/47/51 from NA. All his 4 years in the RN was on the 'Southampton' in three tranches - 24/1/1829 /ab / 30/4/1829 1/5/1829 /ard/ 30/6/1831 1/7/1831 /ab/ 21/1/1833 Presumably the ab means as an Able Seaman and the ard, or is it ord - Ordinary Seaman? Would that be usual after starting as an ab? I believe the 'Southampton' became a Ccoastguard Vessel in 1857 and finished up at Hull as a training ship in 1867 until sold for scrap in 1912. Some of his sons and g-sons would be trained on her. I have had problems trying to download his coastguard career. Would you be able to tell me what his job was and final posting 'crime'? Regards Eric |
