George Davis Customs/Coastguard Portaferry
davidurk
Hi
I am new to the site so any help gratefully received.
I am trying to find any info on my gg grandfather George Davis. According to his son James marriage Certificate in Manchester 1892 George was a customs officer Ireland. I have found that James was born in Portaferry Ireland in 1864, and so presume that George was working in that area at that time and before.
My family history papers state that George was from the UK but I cannot find any infoone way or another about him. For that matter I cannot find anything on James prior to 1901 UK census.
If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be really helpful.
thanks
Karen

Hi Karen

I'm not sure that we can solve your problem. There was a Commissioned Boatman named George Davis working at Portaferry in 1849, and following a couple of transfers, which saw him remain in the area, he was discharged at Killard CGS in 1851.

The difficulty you have is that responsibility for the CG Service passed from Customs & Excise to the Admiralty in 1856, this means that in 1864 they were two distinct services. The National Archives at Kew hold the C&E Establishment Books and Pay Lists in their series of documents prefixed 'CUST'. I think that after a little research of the available documents online, I would make a visit to the NA.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Karen, I might have something useful for you - death of George Davis :
17 Feb 1917 Gerge Davis, Ship's Carpenter, Widower of 1st Margaret Ward, 2nd Jane Douglas, 131 Glasgow St,m Ardrossan, age 81yrs; parents James Davis, HM Coastguard (decd) and Matilda Whalley (decd). Informant John R Davis, grandson.

I think he might be a cousin of my Alexander Davis who was born in Antrim in 1831, and whose parents were George Davis, coastguard and Elizabeth Mathilda Waller. Alex married Janet Doak in Ardrossan in 1855... so you can see where I'm seeing a link
