Very interesting site I'm trying to trace my relative but keep reading other peoples queries
I'm looking for george howard who was at Looe coastguard Station Cornwall in 1871 with his wife Anne
he's living at 220 chapel st on the 1871 census and is there till around 1876 as one of his children is listed as being born in this year,he then disappears and they have a child in clontarf Dublin in 1878
and I'm wondering was he at clontarf coastguard and was he stationed anywhere previously I have now hit a wall and any help from an experienced side would be most welcome

Hi Steve, and welcome to the Forum, I just hope we can live up to your expectations!

For the period you are interested in, your best bet is to download his service record from the National Archives site (£3.50/record). I see from the GENUKI site that he was born in Ireland around 1840. From the NA website there appears to be a likely candidate who gives his date of birth as 1838, which looks a good fit. However, below is a link to all the results:

Hey Many thanks Martin that looks like my man
his record shows him as starting his period of engagement in 1870 but there is no mention of where he's listed, and as a boatman in 1873
and then he's on the archilles in 77 then upto 81 he's in clontarf is there any reason why it doesn't mention looe in cornwall
I've also found the same man on the 1861 census listed as ports abroad so he must be serving some where then

The reason there is no mention of CG service in Looe, is that at this time the CG Stations were recorded in what were 'Ships Establishment Books'. Each district had a warship as their HQ, these ships were manned by a basic crew from the RN, but those CG men in that district would have been required to complete the crew in the event of a national emergency. As a general rule most men undertook a summer training cruise on the ship. In your case Looe was assigned to HMS Achilles then HMS Warrior.

I have now checked the Ships Establishment Book for Achilles (ADM 175/33) and from this found that George Howard had signed on in 1870, with the Continuous Service No.10737A. This indicates that he had earlier service than the record you have already downloaded, because this series (ADM 188) only starts from 1873.

Using this CS number I went back to the NA website and found that George was catalogued as Howards. I'm afraid it's another £3.50, but this will provide details of his earlier service.
