Great Grandfather James Elliott [Boatman]
alexjelliott
Hi,

I am a new memmber to this website and would be grateful for some assistance. I have found out that my Great Grandfather James Elliott born abt1873 in Plymouth was living in Ireland as I have found him in the 1901 Census. I have managed to also trace his naval history, both together confirm that he was a coastguard in Ireland. I would be very interested in knowing where he was stationed and if it is possible to find out such a thing.

All help will be gratefully recieved. Attached is a word document showing that he was a boatman and also a RN Signalman 2nd Yeoman. I have his naval record also if that is of any help.

If any further information is required regarding James Elliott please let me know.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum.

Unfortunately for the period you are interested in you have to rely almost entirely on the RN Service Record. Sometimes the service records in the later ADM 175 series can fill in any gaps, but having checked there is nothing for your man. Out of interest you say that you already have his SR, but I could only find one James Elliott, and he was born in 1884. Could you provide the National Archives ref. for this document (ADM 188/?), and his service number?

Martin,

Many thanks for your reply. The national Archive reference number for James Elliott is ADM 188_211 and his service number is 148367. I have been studying his record quite a bit and if you can shed any light on his career in the RN both as a signalman and as a boatman I would be also very grateful to know. If it is any easier I could e-mail you a PDF copy of his record that I got from the National Archive.

I would be interested to know about decifering sub-ratings and badge information amongst other things.

Regards

Alex

By all means email me a copy of his service record. This is best done to my private email address that can be seen when logged on, and have clicked onto my user-name. This is a little outside my main period of interest, but I'll do my best to answer any questions.

I'm working my way through Elliott's SR, but just to whet your appetite I see that during WW1 he served on HMS Kildoran Castle as a Yeoman of Signals, and was awarded the Victory and British War Medals.

Martin,

That is great to hear, does it actually state on his service record that he got both of those medals. I didn't see any mention of it or on the web link.

Thanks

Alex
