Henry Smith - Coast Guard
Dido
Hi I am trying to trace the life and times of Henry Smith who served on:

HMS Pique 2.12.1856 - 16.2.1859

HMS Boscawan 25.8.1859 - 14.9.1860

HMS Immortalite 15.9.1860 - 15.7.1864

HMS Formidable 16.7.1864 - 11.1.1865

He then "retired" to Kessingland in Suffolk where he worked as a coastguard/boatman until 1874.

Is anyone out there familiar with this ships and what they were up to?

Thanks in anticipation and kind regards

Welcome to the Forum Dido.

To find out more about what the individual ships were doing I would suggest that you visit the following site:

http://www.pbenyo...Index.html

However, I can tell you that Henry, while serving on HMS Pique, took part in the Second China War where he was awarded this medal with the 'Taku Fort 1858' clasp. The information I have for him is that at the time he was an Ordinary Seaman (Ships No.353), that he was born in London in July 1839, and that his medal was sent to HMS Doris on 17 September 1862.

I think you will find that he was still a CG at Kessingland in 1881, and appears on the census with his family.

Thank you Crimea. He allegedly received 3 medals, any idea how I can find out what the other two might have been?

Kind regards

Of the ships you mention, HMS Pique was the only one to qualify for a campaign medal. However, it is likely that he received the RN's Long Service Good Conduct Medal. If you have downloaded his pre and post 1873 service records from the National Archives website, a notation such as 'Traced M' would confirm this award.

The only other likely award woud be a Royal Humane Society medal for a rescue, but to find out more you really need to know a possible year.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for that. Yes he did get an award from the Humane Society for a sea rescue.
