Women employed by Admiralty in late1900's
ChrissyWhitt
Hello,
I wonder if anyone can give me any pointers in order to unlock information about my coastguard grandfather's first marriage [in about 1892] to a Co. Meath woman who, in the 1911 census has her occupation listed as 'Admiralty.'

I am wondering if she could have been a typist or involved with telegraph equipment and was perhaps employed at a coastguard station.

I have my grandfather's Coastguard Service Records from 1886-1919.
George Edwin Webber (132632) was from Devon, but did two stints in Ireland on coastguard ships at Dun Loaghaire, Co. Dublin which was briefly renamed 'Kingstown' in the latter decades of the 1800's.

From June 1888 to March 1892 he was aboard the Belleisle and then served on the Melampus from November 1895 to February 1897.
At around the end of his time on the Belleisle he married Margaret Cox of Co. Meath. However, I can find no marriage records, pre 1901 census or death records for Margaret.

Margaret is something of a mystery woman: other than her name appearing on the birth certificate of their son; on British Coastguards 1841-91 Personnel lists (in King's Lynn) and the 1911 census @ Sandsend, Whitby [where her Admiralty occupation is given] she is not turning up in any other records.
I am hoping that her Admiralty involvement may provide the answer if some-one could give me an idea of where to look.
Thanks in anticipation.

In the England 1901 Census there is a Webber family in District 2, North Lynn, Norfolk - with George (Navyman 31 Woodbury, Devonshire) and Margaret (29 Meath, Ireland) Webber and children Rose (5), Lily (3), George(1) and James (7months).

Rose was born in Meath Ireland. There is a civil birth record for a Mary Rose Webber in Trim Meath born in 1896 to George Webber and Margaret Cox.

There is a Church Baptism record for a Margaret Cox (father's name George) in Oristown RC parish, Meath in 1870. If this is the right Margaret Cox then the earliest marriage year would be about 1888.

If you want to confirm you can buy these records from www.rootsireland.ie

There is a civil marriage record for a George Webber in Jul-Sep 1891 in Rathdown registrattion district which include Kingstown. I haven't found the matching entry so you may need to go to GRO to see if this is your George Webber.

edit:

Using pilot.familysearch.org online the marriage record cannot be examined but there is a Margaret Cox record on the same page (Rathdown Jul-Sep 1891 vol 2 page 763) as George Webber record so this make the marriage very likely. To get a copy of the cert you need to go to or contact GRO http://www.groire...search.htm
