My great grandfather James according to family tradition was drowned off Bloody Foreland in1875 having been stationed with his family at Inniscoo ( Rutand station) for several years. However ADM188/69 says "Discharged dead at station 5 Oct 1875 " Are these two descriptions incompatible? He had joined the Navy 20 years earlier as a boy of 14 and no mention of pension is made. Would his widow have been shipped back to Plymouth or would she have had to make her way back overland with four young sons, three of them born at Inniscoo. No death certificate is traceable - was that normal. Roger Flood |
