To Brixham from Whitstable
Dino
I have been trying to find out more info on my 3xGt Grandfather, George Webb b.1791 (approx) Whitstable who was then stationed at Brixham Coastguard around 1820 (He had a son, George b.1820 Brixham & daughter Frances, b.1822 Brixham). The other children, born before and after these 2 were born in Whitstable.

My family were generally connected with Oyster dredging and diving in Whitstable but wondered if anyone would know if it was common for people to be stationed so far from home - I understand 1820 would have been at the very early stages of the coastguard so how would George have got to hear about a job going in Brixham for example.

Sorry this is an English coastguard query but having read through lots of the forum I have found it very comprehensive and easy to follow. The help on other peoples queries has been incredibly generous and helpful so I am hopeful I will receive a favourable response. Either way I have found lots of interesting info on your site. Thank you for your time.

Welcome to the Forum Dino, and thank you for your kind words about the site.

It was not uncommon for a man to be posted away from his home, nor to be moved every few years. The authorities were concerned that a man might become too friendly with the 'natives', and could turn a blind-eye to any smuggling that might be going on, particularly if it involved other members of the family.

I had a quick look at George's record, and he certainly did not remain in the service long. As you say he signed up in January 1820, with a first posting to Brixham. He was then transferred to Hamble River on 14 September 1825, from where he was discharged on 21 September 1827.

Out of interest I also looked at the GENUKI Coastguard site, and saw there was also a Thomas Webb, born Whitstable 1796 in the service; a possible brother to George?

Thank you Martin - The info you have given me means probably more than you realised. I have always had a bit of a problem with my Gt Gt Grandfather Henry Webb who was born approx 1825 and on subsequent census's always says born Whitstable. However, I have trawled through the baptism records at Canterbury Cathedral for the 2 churches in Whitstable and found no record of him (its possible, of course, he was never baptised but all his 7 siblings were - two of them in Brixham as per prev post - so would seem strange). I can now concentrate on the River Hamble area as, if they were resident in that area at this time, he was possibly baptised there, worth a try anyway.

As for Thomas Webb - I am sure he is a relative as there was only one Webb family in Whitstable during this period - I've just never quite got to tie him in properly.

I saw in a reference book there's also a mention of a Henry Webb and a Thomas Webb from Whitstable in ADM28/34 & 35 but I haven't seen what this info is about - I tried some time ago to get the details from the National Archives but I think I'll have to visit.

Once again thanks ever so much for the info.
