Daniel Jenkins - b 1827, St. Mary Church, Devon
Clio
Hi, hope someone can help me find the Irish CG record of Daniel Jenkins, my gt. gt. g'father. I have his British records - excluding 1881 - but cannot find any Irish link with Valentia. After being widowed in 1871, Newhaven, he disappears off the radar- possibly to Valentia 1872 onwards? One of his dtrs Ellen, married an islander, my gt. gt. g'father, Denis O'Sullivan, He left Valentia & was retired in Fowey by 1891. Thanking you in anticipation.

Hi

I have traced his movements from his entry to the CG service in 1853 until December 1868, but from then can find no entry for him in the records, which is really frustrating.

Prior to 1868 he only served in Ireland once, and that was from 1 January 1868 until 19 December 1868, when he was the Chief Officer (2nd Class) at Arthurstown in Waterford. The Irish records show a posting to the Newhaven District and indicate that he should appear on the Establishment Book for 'Hector'. However, I can find no trace of him.

If you have downloaded his record fron the NA this will show his service from 1873, so there remains a gap of a few years that needs to be filled.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Martin

PS: I should have also mentioned that during the Crimean War he served on HMS Cressy as an AB, Ships No.92. For this service he was awarded the Baltic Medal.

Hi Martin,
Thank you for your help- really useful information & I share your frustration re those missing years. I suspect that on his return to Newhaven, with 5 children still at home and a wife who may have been ill, he could have had a career break? In addition, 3 dtrs were deaf and dumb. When I have some spare time, I will tackle the National Archives Admiralty records from 1873 to check for Valentia - no idea where to start, but I will enjoy the thrill of the chase! Thank you again for your help! Clio

Hi,
I am also related to Daniel Jenkins. His daughter, Ellen, was my great grandmother. She was mother to Maurice George O'Sullivan, who was my grandfather. His daughter, Eithne O'Sullivan Healy was my mother. I am Geraldine Healy Dwyer. I live in the U.S. and am very interested in what I've seen written by your and the persons who replied to you.
I have other information that you might find useful!
You can send a private message to me, or just reply to this.
