I have recently discovered that my late father in law was born in a coastguard cottage at Dirk Cove in County Cork. His father was a coastguard there at the end of the 19th century - I think from about 1892 to 1900. I have tried to find Dirk Cove on a map but am not having much luck at the moment. We are visiting Ireland in early September and want to go down to Dirk Cove to see if we can find the coastguard cottage. Any help with the location and history of Dirk Cove would be much appreciated. Kind regards, Bessie ![]() |

Bessie I did a quick internet search for Dirk Cove and came across the following architects site, which talks about the renovation and extension of the very coast guard cottages to which you refer. http://ireland.archiseek.com/tesserae/000002.html Regards Martin |

Hi Martin, Thank you for that - how very different from when my husband's grandfather was coastguard there! At least we will be able to see it when we go - it looks quite amazing. Bessie ![]() |

Bessie As an architect myself, a photographic record is usually made of any existing building before work commences. It might be worth contacting the architects and seeing if they have done the same, and if they would be prepared to send you copies. Most now use digital cameras, so sending copies by email is easy. Worth a try. Martin |

Hi again Martin, I have received an email from the architect - really quickly too! I have looked on our computer server and cannot see any photos of the coastguards station prior to the extension being built. When I or one of my colleagues has some time, we will have a look in our archive to see if we perhaps have any physical photographs of the site prior to construction that we could scan and email to you. Unfortunately the office is working to some deadlines at the moment and cannot spare enough time to get to our archive, but if you will bear with me, we will try to have a look for you. I would imagine such images do exist somewhere around here! So it's quite likely they will look for me when they have the time ![]() I have now emailed the local library to see what they have available too - with a view to visiting it on our trip to Ireland. Thank you again for your help Martin. Kind regards, Bessie |

Hi Bessie, I have just discovered the CoY site. My G-Grandfather was also born in the coastguard cottages at Dirk Cove (in 1854). I know your post was a couple of years ago, but did you ever get any response from the architect? I would be interested in any photos of the cottages prior to the renovation. Many thanks, Matt |
