John Mort Bate
animalgirl
Hi all,
I have been tracing John Mort Bate and his family. He was in the coastguard from it's inception until he died in Totnes in 1845, he was stationed in Norfolk, Kent and Devon but around 1841 was sationed somewhere in Ireland, I have failed to find any reference to him in Ireland.
He was in the Royal Navy at the beginning of the 19th centuary, left the service for a while then returned to the coastguard becomming a Commander.
Any help with his time in Ireland would be very welcome, thanks for your time.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum.

I've looked at JM Bate's records and can find no evidence that he ever served in Ireland, so would be interested to know why you believe he did so.

He appears to have had three periods of service in the CG service. Following the wounds received in the first he was promoted to Commander, subsequently being appointed Inspecting Commander in Cromer in April 1837, from where he was discharged on 5 April 1840. He was then appointed to Aldbrough on 18 January 1842, being removed to Dartmouth on 5 July 1844, where he died on 3 May 1845.

What is telling is that London is given as his place of appointment prior to taking up his post at Alborough. Had he been serving in Ireland during the two year gap I would have expected his last posting to have been his place of appointment.

This seems to be borne-out by his entry in O'Bryne which make no reference to any service in Ireland.

Thanks Martin,
I am not sure that he was ever posted to Ireland! your reply indicates that he was not. I have "lost" him on the 1841 census records and thought there was the possibilty of him being in Ireland, If you ever come across him -anywhere- then please remember me.
Thanks again Smile
