Coastguard transport
Elisabeth
Recently visiting a North Devon cove where my greatgrandfather Frederick Ashby had to guard a wreck at Christmas 1882, I wondered how they reached such locations from their Stations. In his memoir (see Articles) he says this place, Heddons Mouth, was at the limit of his "guard" - he was based at Combe Martin. It must be at least 7 miles by coast path, very hilly, or more by inland lanes. Or did they use horses, or perhaps more likely go by boat? That could have been very hazardous in winter. He gives no clue, presumably because he took for granted that readers would know. But after 3 generations - we are left wondering.
Incidentally I now have photographs of the lime kiln where he sheltered from the cold.
