Hi Chris, and welcome to the Forum.

I'm not sure if you already have them, but there are two service record entries for your man on the National Archives site. Both can be downloaded for a small fee.

He would appear to have enlisted in the RN in 1853, so he could have seen service during the Crimean War. If you can let me know what ships he was on in 1854-56 I will check if to see if he appears on the medal rolls for either the Baltic or Crimea Medal.

I'm glad the lead proved useful.

The ship you have as 'Clowro' is in-fact the wooden screw gunboat HMS Clown. Based on the dates he served on her I checked the 2nd China Medal roll and found that Francis was entitled to this medal, with the Canton 1857 clasp. From the info I have, he was invalided to HMS Melville on 9 Dec 1859. These medals were issued unnamed, so unless he had his privately engraved you are unlikely to find it.

Unfortunately I have been unable to identify his previous ship, so if you could email me this page of his record, using my private email address, I will try and decipher it for you.

Royal George, Hawke and Frederick William were all CG HQ ships. Their establishment books can be downloaded for free from the NA website. These each have a surname name index, and from this you can establish which CG Station he served at.
