My grandfather was working as a cosatguard at a station in Cornwall, near St Austell in the 1881 census. He gave his place of birth as Co Mayo. His name was William James Thompson and in 1881 was aged 28. Could anyone tell me if there were possibly Thompson's who were part of the coastguard family in Mayo around the time of his birth c 1852? I have looked around myself but cannot find a Thompson that fits this given name. This date is too early for the Birth, deaths and Marriages in Dublin. Edited by crimea1854 on 14/06/2010 16:35 |

Hi Suzanne There appear to have been two Thompson's serving in Mayo during the period you are interested in: Robert Thompson, Chief Boatman, @ Ballyglass between 1850 and 1862. William Thompson, Boatman, @ Innisgowla between 1849 and 1862. I note from WJ Thompson's RN service record that he gave his place of birth as Kilmina, which is also spelt Kilmeena. Having looked at Griffith's Valuation for 1856-57 there is only one Thompson listed in Kilmeena, and that is William Thompson - Islands in Clew Bay (Innisgowla), so I'm inclined to think that if he is from a CG family, then the above William is his father. This was William snr. first posting, having previously served on HMS Vernon in the Royal Navy. From the ADM 175/19 record William appears to have a middle name, but I cannot read it. If you wanted to try yourself then you need page 236 of 472. Martin Edited by crimea1854 on 14/06/2010 16:36 |

Thank you so much you are brilliant!! Can you tell me where you sourced the Royal Navy record that you quoted? My family will be so pleased to hear what you have told me. I really appreciate the information you have given here. Is the ADM 175/19 from the records at KEW? I have only carried out research on Irish repositories anything outiside of that is a mystery to me. Regards Suzanne |

Suzanne There are two service records for WJT, one pre and the other post 1873. Follow the link below, then both can be downloaded for £3.50 each. http://www.nation...diaarray=* Re the ADM 175/19 record, this is a CG Establishment Book and can be downloaded for free from the National Archives website. However, one word of caution this is an extremely large file. Regards Martin |

Suzanne This may be a bit of a long-shot, but I have a William Thompson CG serving on HMS Prince Regent in the Baltic, and HMS Royal Albert in the Black Sea, qualifying for both the Baltic Medal and Crimea Medal with Sebastopol Clasp. The reason I think this may be your man is because his Baltic Medal was sent to Westport CGS on 20/4/57, and Innisgowla falls within the Westport District. On entering HMS Prince Regent in 1854 he gave his age as 40, and his place of birth as Falmouth. The only way to confirm if this is one and the same man is to visit the National Archives at Kew and consult HMS Vernon's Ships Description Book in ADM 38/9237. In addition to providing/confirming your mans place of birth, it will also list all his previous ships, and provide a physical description. All the best. Martin |

Wow you have been busy. I really appreciate your hard work. I sometimes have enquiries for our church and I know that sometimes I can really get caught up in a search. After a recent good result a man came over from America to visit his family grave and was very happy with what I was able to do for him. His ancestor was a Vice Admiral John Hackett RN whom I now know more about than I really need to thanks to his decendant. Once again thank you for your interest in my ancestor and giving me an excuse to go to Kew, as if I needed one. Best wishes Suzanne |
