Hello, I'm new to this site so I apologise if any of this has been covered before, I have had a look through but there is so much excellent information I'm trying to take it all in. I do have a few queries and would be grateful for any answers. I'm doing some research on a Daniel Bishop who joined the Navy in 1873 as a carpenter making it to Shipwright by 1881. He transferred to the Coastguard in 1884 where he was posted to Ireland on the Belleisle based in Newcastle and Kingstown. So first question, in his Naval Records it says under the column 'Rating etc' that he was Div Corp while in the coastguard, what would this have meant? Also when you transferred to the Coastguard, would it have been out of choice, or would it have been an order? And as a Shipwright, where would this have fitted in with the command structure? Just a few questions to begin with, so here's hoping. ![]() Mark. Edited by MarkyP on 07/06/2010 14:26 |

Hi Mark, and welcome to the Forum. The following is only my understanding, and should not be taken as gospel. The rate you refer too is 'Divisional Carpenter', who I believe was responsible for any repairs to the many CG boats in the division he was attached to. It was not normal to be transferred directly from the Navy to the CG service, particular at this time. However, a man was normally nominated to the service, with his Captains recommendation, from his last ship. In most instances these tended to be family men who wanted to serve their time to gain a pension, and remain on shore with their family. Although single men did enter the CG service from the Navy. Martin I have just found the following on P Benyon's website that may be of interest: http://www.pbenyo..._1856.html Edited by crimea1854 on 07/06/2010 19:36 |

Thank you Martin, so would it have been unusual to go back to the Navy proper? His records show that he was in the Coastguard until 1897, then is shown as Pensioned, there is a 3 year gap and then he is shown back in the Navy on the Duke of Wellington as a Shipwright Ist Class. If he was a civilian shipwright would this be shown in his Naval records? Sorry, gone off tangent a bit, not exactly a Coastguard related question. Cheers, Mark. PS Thought it might be an idea to attach a transcibed version of his record, with Div. Corp changed to Carp, makes sense now ![]() Hmm, can't seem to attach the word document! Ok, done it, should read the instructions first! ![]()
