Another Zacharia Nicholass
robertah
Hello again

Perhaps I am pushing my luck now but I have just identified another Zach Nicholass (also born Deal but 1840) who at his marriage in 1859 at Greenock, Scotland was on HMS Hogue as ship steward. From a google search I find this ship (sometimes La Hogue or the Hague) was at this time a coast Guard vessel under Captain John Moore and later Captain Reginald J J G MacDonald.

Are there any crew lists including Zach or would a ship steward not feature? Our only other record for him is in 1876 on ss Agnes still as cook and steward in Adelaide, Australia.

Any help would be appreciated

Many thanks once again

Hi again Roberta

I have checked the Seamans Service records on the NA website and found a Zach Nicholas who was born in Deal, according to the record in 1841. Given that dates of birth are notoriously inaccurate, it might be worth downloading this (for a small fee) to see if his service includes HMS Houge during the right period.

The only other way to check is to actually consult the Ships Description Book for HMS Houge at the NA. This would have the ENTIRE crew listed, and would also contain details of previous service as well as a physical description.

hello again Martin

I did check the National archives - the ship he entered was the "Colossus" on the 22 Jan 1856 as Boy 2nd Class volunteering for 10 years from age 18. However across his entry form is written "discharged by Purchase PUO 23 Nov 1858". No ships or dates are entered in his service log at all.

Interestingly in 1881 census his wife is listed as a widow suggesting that Zach died 1876 - 1881, perhaps at sea as there is no death registered for him in Scotland.

We do have a record for him from Adelaide to Sydney 4 April 1876 on "Agnes". From a Google search this morning it seems the "Agnes" was shipwrecked 18 July 1876 on Carpenter Rocks near Adelaide however it seems all 6 crew were rescued. As yet I have not been able to find a list of the crew.

Many thanks for your help and interest

Roberta
