Bernard Since the 1860,s The large Coastguard buildings were designed by the Office of Public Works in Dublin under instruction from the Admiralty Offices in London. Each site had specific working drawings and the work was undertaken by local contractors, The buildings when completed were signed off to the satisfaction of the the District Officer and then handed over to a Coastguard crew. A number (169) of incomplete contract drawings for the 26 Counties of Southern Ireland are held by the National Archives, Bishop Street, Dublin. A list of these O.P.W. Architectural drawings of Coastguard buildings can be downloaded from the National Archives web-site. Up to some years ago these drawings were on view to the researcher, there may be restrictions now due to conservation concerns. Regards Tony Daly |
