Samuel Syms
Russell
The 1891 England Census has Samuel Syms as a coastguard pensioner in Cornwall. The census entry says four of his children, Elizabeth, Emma, Frederick and George were born in the County of Down in Ireland. I assume the children were born there while Samuel was stationed in County Down as a member of the coast guard. All of my research has not found the childrens births listed in England or Ireland data bases. Does this mean the births of the children are only in coastguard records and if so how does one obtain those records? I also cannot find any service records for Samuel.

Russell welcome to the Forum.

I'm afraid the CG records contain little or no family information, nor can I find a nomination for your man into the CG Service before 1863. However, the National Archives does have two service records (one pre and the other post 1873) that can be downloaded for a small fee that I think relate to Samuel.

With the name and a date when he worked at a particular CG Station it may be possible to track down some specific information re his CG career, but there is a gap in the later records, which means one has to rely on the above service records.

From about May72 until at least June 1879 - Samuel Syms was in Clandeboye, Donaghdee which is about halfway between the Belfast and Netwonards registration districts.

In the GRO index for Newtonards there are the following birth entries.
George Edward Steele Syms 1885
Elizabeth Ellen Lilian Syms 1874
Samuel John Syms 1872

If Samuel John Syms were a son, he may not appear on a 1891 Census with the family as he would be 19.

There are other possible entries with names such as Simms including
Emma Hazel Simms 1884
