command structuure for stations
patlavelle
I am interested in the command structure of coastguard stations in Donegal from 1820 onwards.
I notice from 1901 and 1911 census that there are Ch Offrs and Insp Ch Offrs in some stations.
I presume the structure was therefore from station to Inspector and to Division level.
Can anyone please advise where this information may be available.

The site is easy to access and the information available is excellent and very informative.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Firstly the Coast Guard was not formed as an organisation until 1822 under the direction of the Board of Customs.

The following comes from Bernard Scarlett’s book 'Shipminder, The Story of Her Majesty’s Coastguard':

The chain of command of the Force was headed by the Comptroller-General and Deputy Comptroller-General, both Royal Navy commanders, who had headquarters at ‘Coastguard Office, Custom House, London.’ Then followed the Inspecting Commander of each district who was in command of a group of coastguard stations. Each station was controlled by a Chief Officer who had a staff consisting of Chief Boatman-in Charge, Commissioned Boatman and Boatman.

I hope this answers your question.

Martin,

Many thanks for clarifying the command structure of the
coastguard.

Have you any idea where I can establish the districts and stations within each

Thanks

If you follow the link it will take you to the 1897 CG Map, this should give you a good idea as to how the stations were grouped.
