Hi, I am new to this website and was wondering could you please give me any advice on where to look! Iam researching my family history and my gggggrandfather was a lifeguard for the Navey. His name was Lawrence Frazer born in i think its Monocihon in Ireland. He was born in 1811 and im not sure what year he started as a coastguard. I know that he moved over to Coathm North yorkshire sometime inbetween,1839-1840. He and his family are on the census from 1841 each decade up untill his death in 1890s. He was listed as a Coastguard in the 1841-1851 census for Coatham north yorkshire The address was high street coathm.the parish was at that timeKirk Leatham Guisborough. I have looked on the national arcives for naval records but no look ,im not sure i think it could be the merchant navey he was a coasguard for.In the later censusus he is described as navey pensioner. I lookforward to your reply, any guidence or help would be great. Many Thanks. kind Regards Bev. |

Hi Bev, and welcome to the Forum. Using the ADM 175 series of CG Establishment Books I have traced Frazer's career to the point where he was transferred to Coatham. If you would like me to go further please let me know. He was nominated to the CG service on 3 Aug 1822, from Carlingford, his first posting being Sheephaven CG Station on 8 Aug 1822. This suggests that your birth year is out by at least 7 years, or maybe more. I have also found that when a man was nominated from a place, as opposed to from the Royal Navy, he tended to be a local to the place of nomination. 27 Nov 1822 transfer to Port Terlin 20 April 1825 transfer to Portrane 10 Oct 1825 transfer to Baldoyle 31 Aug 1829 transfer to Portrane 31 Oct 1831 transfer to Holywood 5 April 1834 transfer to Port Muck - all the above are in Ireland 4 July 1840 transfer to Coatham I tried to check the National Archives main catalogue to see if he had submitted a pension application (this would be in ADM 29), but the catalogue, via the internet, was playing-up, so I would try this on another day. Finally, this name rings a bell with me, but for the life of me I cannot think why - I'm hoping it will come back to me!! All the best Martin |

Note sure if this is useful or new but if you search the Irish Genealogy site http://www.irishg...index.html with the name "Lawrence Frazer" - it find one record for the marriage of Laurence Fraisure in 1808 . -- Edited by Philip on 10/01/2010 12:32 |

Hi Martin, Thankyoiu very much for the info on Lawrence Frazer. I suppose the birth date could be a little out as the census records are not always correct. I have been looking for information on Lawrence for ages, last year i went to Coatham North Yorks to the Coasguards museum but unfortunatley no luck. I would be greatfull for anthing on him in yorkshire if at all possible. I wonder why the name rings a bell?do you think he was famous? Maybe not! Thank you once again for your help Martin. Kind Regards Bev. |
