As a new boy to the site may I congratulate the Web Master on an excelent job. I was seeking information about my Gt Gf William Edward Leigh who I know was a Coastguard in Ireland in the 1890-1900's as he had 4 children during that time. Ethel Edith b 1884 Maude Adel b 1886 Minnie Louise b 1886 and Thomas Benjamin born 1889. I believe they were born in Achill or Ballyglass whilst William Edward was serving in that area. I did locate a William Edward Lee on the fabulous search engine in this site at Cromane Point ref NO #1251. Can you advise me if Cromane Point and Achill are the same location please and any other information that you may be able to assist me with would be appreciated Many Thanks Alan Leigh Newton Abbot UK |

Hi Alan, and welcome to the Forum. I believe these are two different men, because Cromane Point is in Kerry, while Achill and Ballyglass are in Mayo. You may already have done this, but if your William was born in Cornwall in 1855, you could download his service record from the National Archives: http://www.nation...ltcount=14 Regards Martin |

Alan I don't know how far you have got with tracing William's life before joining the CG service, but there is a very good free-to-view census and parish records site available for Cornwell. http://freepages....earch.html Using this site I found details of William's baptism, together with Census returns for 1861 and 1871. Alan. In 1901 William and his family were at the Portoustock CG Station, Helston, Cornwall. His children Ethel Edith (17), Maud A. (16), Minnie Louisa (15), Thomas B. (12) and Frederick E. (8) are all shown as born in" Ireland." William was a Boatman. By 1911 William had left HMCG. He was living in High Cross St. St. Austell as a school caretaker. Maud Adel (25), Minnie Louisa (24), Thomas Benjamin (22) and Frederick Edward (19) ware all still at home, and shown as born "County Mayo, Ireland." Noel Edited by aussienoel on 26/10/2009 03:21 |
