Could one of your contributors explain the reference numbers which appear in the "Reference" and "Cause" columns of the individual CG station records? They're usually in the form "R2914" or "See 3108/30". Do they relate to specific documents and are these docuemnts extant? I would be grateful for any information AchillPat |

Hi, and welcome to the Forum. I cannot with any certainty explain the numbering, however, I believe it relates to the numbering used in correspondance, with the 'R' indicating 'Removed'. Whether these letters still exists I cannot say. There are instances where the same number is used indicating both the removal from one station, and the appointment at the new station. This suggests that the system was established to track a man, and the correspondance related to his transfer. Re the two number sequence; again I believe the first number identifies a letter and the second the year. So in your example letter number 3108 in 1830. Regards Martin |
