I am currently doing research for a friend of the family, and I'm trying to determine the fate of a member of the Coastguard in the 1880's. He was Denis John O'Neil, born about 1843 in Castletown. The 1881 census shows him living in Kent with his young family and that he is a member of "the coastguard". In the 1891 census I have found his widow Elizabeth and their 5 children living in Middlesex with her father and brothers. Family lore indicates that he "died at Gibraltar". I do know that their 3 youngest children were born about 1883 to 1887 in "British Heligoland", and small area off the coast of Germany. That is indicated on the 1891 census. 2 of his sons eventually joined the Coastguard, and I found that info' at the National Archives site. They were George Denis O'Neil and Henri Charles Denis O'Neil. Any suggestions on determining that fate of this man will be greatly appreciated. Neil Kilmartin Pickering, Ontario CANADA |
